Just letting everyone know that Rick is doing very well, I am very happy with his progress. He is now walking with his walker and out of the wheel chair. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

It has been a very busy time for us. We have had a lot of up's and down's. Rick came down with pneumonia, which has been a long time in healing. He was in the hospital for four days. He's been really weak. The next morning after getting home from the hospital, he fell out of bed. Back in the ER, they found 2 broken ribs. So he has had a very rough time. However, yesterday, he was finally back to using his walker and walked the length of the house. He has started to eat more.
So far we haven't filled our empty bed (left vacant when Helen left) That is causing a bit of a stress, but I know that when it is meant to happen the right person will come in. Everyone else is doing very well.

I have started to write this many times and I just haven't been able to finish it. I guess I just need to spit it out. We are going through some major changes here. The first is that my husband and I have separated. We have simply grown apart after all these years. Nothing in regard to our family home and elder care is changing because of this. I am still going to run the home as I always have. I do love this job and I wouldn't let my people down. What's more, I now have more help than ever before, so that I can get away from time to time.

It has become a very busy time for us here. We are doing some fall cleaning. We had a big dumpster brought in, and I'm cleaning up what has become piled up around the house and yards.
Yesterday while I was cleaning, all three ladies came out and sat with me. They thought they could help by showing what I needed to pick up. It was a lot of fun. It was one of those rare nice days that we have on the beach. When they come you have to do as much as possible because we only get one of those in a row.

Well I must say that things are going very well. The new man, Rick, moved in last Tuesday. He is very nice, although he does have a little dementia, but don't we all, at times? His dog, Annie, is great. She is starting to warm up to all of us, but she sticks pretty close to Rick, especially when he isn't feeling very well.

Things are going really well. We are getting the new guy. His family is so very nice, I think that it will be a perfect fit. He also has a little dog that he is going to bring with him. Usually we have to wait a month before we get someone new; this just goes to show that this person is meant to be here.

Today we had Burt's funeral it was a very nice service. The family had a priest with a very good since of humor. That is so rare to find, especially for a funeral. I know that Burt would have loved it. After the service we all enjoyed a meal, and I was able to meet some of the family members. It is a very nice family and very enjoyable. I was so very glad to see that the family made it a good time, as it really was just what Burt was all about.

We are so sorry to announce that Burt has passed away. He left us on Monday evening. His family was with him to the end. It was a blessing for him, as he had been going down hill for awhile. This is definitely one of the harder parts of caring for the elderly, but it is also contains a blessing, for I know that he was comfortable and well taken care of.

We have bad news here. Burt is not doing very well at all. He is slowly slipping away. He has stopped eating anything, and he is now on oxygen, so I think that we only have a few days left with him. This is just a short note I have so much to do but I wanted to let you all know.

In the past when anyone has called me and asked me "how are things going" I always responded with the "Oh just the same as always." Well after writing this blog and thinking about what I can write, I realized that really the only thing that is the same is the fact that I am still caring for 5 elderly people. Everyday something changes just little; comments people make, the health that they are in, or big changes like the ones made the other day, so really nothing is ever the "same".

I am sorry that it has been so long since I have written. I would like to write every day but sometimes I just don't get to it.
So today I would like to write about what usually goes on in the house.

Well I am not sure if I made a mistake last night or not. I guess we will see how it plays out.
What happened is Pat had a different friend come over who was giving her communion after dinner. She started talking to this friend about what was going on and once again her friend told me that Pat was talking about her socks so I am not sure if there was any other "problems" that she talked about or not. So having finally heard enough from others I decided it may be time to confront the situation.

On Wednesday the Ombudsman came out to see Pat, both Pat and Helen were in their room. I talked to her for a minute, told her that everything was still the same; Pat was still packed, and she still hadn't told me anything about any of it. So the Ombudsman went to the room to talk to the ladies. Well it was about 30 minutes later when Helen came out, and I could tell that she was a little upset, she came to the kitchen counter where I was making lunch for them, and she said "she is full of crap" she couldn't believe that Pat was saying bad things about us and that she was still on the kick that she is going home.

Right now we have a full house of five people. Out of respect for them and also because of the privacy they, and their families, are entitled to, I can not use their real names here. So this is who we have.

To start this out I need to tell you a little bit about what it is that we do. We have a 4 bedroom 3 bath home in Washington state, and we have opened it up as an adult family home. What that means is that we take care of the elderly on a 24/7 basis. This is an alternitve to the elderly having to move to a nursing home. We only take care of 5 people at a time. Also we are licensed by the state, that means that we do go through inspections on a regular basis.
